A study of 46,355 post-menopausal women with a mean age of 58 years was conducted to observe the relationship among incidence and duration of breast cancer and duration and type of hormone use. The population was measured for estrogen use, estrogen-progestine use, mammographic screening, age at menopause, body mass index, education and age. Two thousand eighty two cases of breast cancer were identified in the study: Relative risk increased with estrogen use and as importantly, relative risk increased 8 fold with the estrogen-progestine combination therapy. Interestingly, risk was highest in slender women with a body mass index of 24.4 kg m2 or less. The investigators concluded that while women using estrogen therapy experienced a slightly increased risk of cancers, those using estrogen-progestine combinations experienced a greater risk.
